How it works — technical details
When you upload a PDF, the following happens on our server (in this exact order):
- PDF text extraction — we use PyPDF2 to extract the text layer page-by-page (max 80 pages).
- Encryption check — if the PDF is password-protected we reject it (use our PDF Unlock tool first).
- Length capping — we truncate the text to 80,000 characters (~20,000 tokens) to give the AI enough room to answer.
- AI call — your question + document text is sent to Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.6, which is the highest-rated model for long-context comprehension.
- Response — the answer is streamed back to your browser. The PDF is discarded from memory immediately after.
What doesn't happen: we don't write your PDF to disk, we don't index it for search, we don't reuse it to train any model.
Limitations — honest disclosure
- Scanned PDFs (image-only) won't work yet — we'll add OCR support soon.
- Very long PDFs (>200 pages) get truncated to first 80 pages.
- The AI answers only from the document — it won't make up facts.
- Rate-limited to 20 questions per hour per IP to keep the service free.
